Lane Castle, the developers of historic site, Paynes and Borthwick Wharves in Deptford in conjunction with JER Partners have teamed up with local boating charity, AHOY, to enter two teams of rowers into London's biggest annual boating event.

On Saturday 8th September, The Great River Race will see rowing boats of all shapes and sizes take to the Thames and race the gruelling 22 miles from Richmond to Greenwich. This year 300 boats are expected to take part in the race, carrying over 2,000 competitors racing for 35 trophies, making it the biggest and most prestigious event of its kind in Europe.

AHOY is a charity which has established a sailing & boating centre on the river, adjacent to the Paynes and Borthwick Wharves site in Deptford. The centre offers people of all ages and backgrounds, young, disabled and retired alike the chance to learn and experience water based activities including sailing, racing and rowing as well as how to build and maintain boats.

All funds raised by the AHOY teams taking part in The Great River Race will help the centre continue its work, purchase additional equipment and develop in particular the rowing capabilities of the centre.

Mark O'Grady, of Lane Castle said:

"The AHOY Centre does a fantastic job in offering those who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to experience boating and sailing. The River is such a crucial part of our development, it's a great opportunity for us to become involved with the development of the Centre. The Great River Race is a wonderful way of celebrating the fun and sports you can have on the River and raising money for such worthwhile causes at the same time. We wish the very best of luck to the AHOY teams taking part."

With the redevelopment of Paynes and Borthwick Wharves, Lane Castle aim to create a new cultural destination with residential apartments, art galleries, a restaurant and retail space and open up Deptford's historic waterfront area to provide local people with renewed access to landscaped areas overlooking the Thames.
